'Movin' On' - October 23, 2008, UMass Amherst Fine Arts Center

The University Dancers performed George Faison's, Movin' On with Alvin Ailey II on the Fine Arts Center Stage this past October. This unprecedented opportunity was made possible through a collaboration between the UMass Amherst Fine Arts Center, Alvin Ailey II and The Sankofa Dance Project.

Movin' On, with music by Betty Carter, is about loosing the shackles of American segregation and stepping forward bravely into a new world.  "[Movin' On is] just really trying to make a statement to make actual change to move on from those (old) ways to some type of enlightenment." says Ailey II dancer, Josh Johnson.

“Ailey II can be counted on to deliver high-energy dancing made even more electric by the push of youthful ambition. The future of American dance is safe in the hands of today’s young dancers” The New York Times

"The Ailey II dancers can jump improbably high and land improbably softly, pour their bodies like cream into backbends and lifts, ripple their torsos and turn like tops." The New York Times
